“The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” a 2012 Disney film, explores parenthood through Cindy and Jim Green’s brief, profound time with an extraordinary child. Earlier, we met Timothy, the magical boy born from Jim and Cindy’s buried wishes. They embrace him as leaves fall with each fulfilled wish. At the town meeting on the factory’s closure, the owner unveils the Greens’ leaf-made pencil, crediting his son, Franklin. Timothy grabs the mic and says his parents invented it. Asked why, Timothy answers, “Because I have leaves on my legs,” sparking laughter. Once inside, he finally explains that when his leaves go, so does he.

In the rain, they unearth the box and weep. He writes he gave his leaves away, because that’s what you do with gifts. One each to Aunt Brenda, Uncle Bub, Miss Crudstaff, Coach Cal, Reggie, Grandpa Jim, and two to Joni. For his parents: “If you came to me and said, there are two people in the world who want you more than anything. And you’ll only get them for a short time. But they will love you more than you can ever imagine. Well, when that’s true, I’d say, so much is possible.” Timothy’s story reminds us parenthood is defined by love, not biology. Some enter our lives for a season, yet shape our hearts forever.
